Smart bulbs are internet-capable bulbs that allow control of scheduling and customisation of lighting remotely and automatically. They can be configured easily with a remote, switch or mobile application. The bulbs are integrated with wireless communication technology such as ZigBee, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or any other connection appropriate for home automation systems.
Features of smart bulbs
1. Smart bulbs can dim and brighten.
With a smart bulb, you no longer require the installation of dimmer switches for your home. Screw them into your chandeliers or lamps; then you will be able to brighten or dim it through their corresponding controls.
2. Can be controlled from any location.
With smart bulbs, it is possible to control lighting from anywhere. Some of them have scheduling options that can trigger certain lighting effects at particular times. If an app can control your light bulb, you can manipulate the light from any location, even in another country. This fact makes the bulbs an ideal security option, especially when you are away from home for extended periods of time. You can give the impression that your home is occupied in your absence, and you can save on electricity since lights can be scheduled and controlled by you.
3. Changing colours
Some smart bulbs are capable of producing sixteen million colours or more. To select the intended colour, just click on the colour wheel featured in the bulb’s application. You may want to change your bulb colour to warm the room by changing to golden yellow or cool the room by turning to colour light blue. During parties, the light’s colour can also be modified to match the theme of the party. Some bulbs emit some colour temperatures which are designed specifically for aiding in melatonin production in your body. The settings can increase the levels at night for better sleep.
4. Music & Motion
Some smart bulbs are fitted with speakers which enable music playback and motion detectors. The bulbs are accompanied by colours that match the rhythm of the music playing. Also, motion sensors externally or internally can put the lights on and off.
5. Smart Home Assistant Capable
Your home assistant Alexa (Amazon), and a few other assistants like Siri (iPhone) can manipulate the bulbs with the sound of your voice. Alexa has the most support for smart bulbs presently.
To conclude, I believe a smart bulb is worth the money, and it is a great asset to have. It is beautiful a conversation starter. Lighting can be influential in changing moods and relaxation, so that's a plus. Their controls are straightforward, and they make you sleep better too. What more can you ask for from a bulb?
I leave you with three affordable lights on the market. Arguably the Philips White Hue bulb is the best.
