We are in the most active time of the hurricane season, and we need to be aware and prepared for all types of weather systems thoroughly. Our neighbours Dominica, Barbuda, BVI, Puerto Rico and Anguilla, got walloped by hurricanes Maria and Irma. It is imperative that we all pay close attention to storm advisories and NEMO. Being caught off guard by a storm can be disastrous. Below is a checklist to get you prepared for any storm.

1         Ensure that trees are trimmed or cut down if they are close to property.

    2.       Food & Water - Although some people say that you should have at least a three-day supply of food and water. A four-week supply is what is favoured. A Tank for storing water is essential in our part of the world because of the likelihood of our water supply getting compromised by landslides and debris.Non-perishable food, e.g. Canned Tuna Fish, Sardines, crackers are the perfect food to stock up on.

    3.       A transistor or hand-cranked radio for keeping abreast with what is happening when the electricity is out.

    4.       Flashlight / Lamps- Candles pose the threat of fire and caution need to be maintained when using them.

    5.       Batteries /Generators/ Portable battery packs - These can play a pivotal role during and after the storm. Having enough batteries to power radios, lights and to charge phones are essential. Sometimes it can be days after a hurricane before the power can be restored.

    6.       Whistle to signal for help.

    7.       Moist towelettes and sanitizers, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation.

    8.       Manual can opener for food & matches to cook along with mess kits, paper cups, plates, paper towels and plastic utensils.

    9.       Baby formula, bottles, diapers, wipes, diaper rash cream, clean towels.

    10.   Cash (Small Notes) There may be shops opened and change might be limited.

    11.   Household bleach/ chlorine and medicine dropper to disinfect water.

    12.   Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items.

    13.   Entertainment - Paper pencils, pens, puzzles, board games.

    14.   Ensure that relevant papers are secure in a waterproof container.

    15.   A First aid kit for medical emergencies. Emergency responders will not be able to get to you in the middle of the storm.

I hope these tips are helpful. If you think I missed anything, please add a comment below and don't forget to share.
